Truck Passes Warning Sign, Slams into Binghamton Bridge

A tractor-trailer driver passed by a sign advising all trucks to stop before hitting a railroad bridge in Binghamton.

No injuries were reported when the too-tall trailer smashed into the bridge on Robinson Street on the city's East Side around 12:45 p.m. Wednesday.

The driver of the truck, who lives in New Jersey, said he had exited the nearby highway because of a construction-related traffic backup.

The operator of the truck said the trailer on the rig was 13 feet, 6 inches tall. Signs on the bridge indicate a clearance of 11 feet, 7 inches.

The trailer was loaded with 120 empty flower racks that were being returned to a plant grower.

The truck was operated by Godding Transport of Mahway, New Jersey.

Additional warning signs were installed on Robinson Street in 2017 in an effort by the city to reduce the number of crashes at the railroad bridge.

The signs advise all truck traffic to "come to a complete stop" to "check clearance before proceeding."

Although fewer crashes have occurred at the railroad bridge since the signs were put up, they still happen occasionally.
