Authorities say 19-year-old Joao Souza died at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City shortly after he was attacked in Windham Hall.

Binghamton University police chief Timothy Faughnan said Souza had sustained stab wounds in the incident, which happened around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. He was transported to the hospital by the student-run Harpur's Ferry ambulance service.

University representatives located Souza's parents in Brazil to inform them of their son's death. School officials say Souza was a freshman engineering student.

Faughnan said the police presence on the campus was increased following the stabbing, which he said is not believed to have been a "random act." The chief said New York State Police are assisting in the investigation.

Police described the suspect as a light-skinned male who was wearing dark pants and a Puma brand hooded sweatshirt.

People with information about the stabbing may contact Binghamton University Police at 607.777.2393.

Binghamton University canceled classes for Monday in the aftermath of Souza's death. Classes are expected to resume on Tuesday.
