Surveys to Replace Citizen Panels for New York Deer Management Plans
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is looking for some new input into how to manage the state's deer population.
In the past, the DEC had Citizen Task Force participate in providing information about the current state and future of the deer populations in various areas of the state.
The Department and Cornell University researchers have now come up with a survey to ask people what changes they want to see for the deer population in their area over the course of the next few years.
Residents of 1/3 of the state are receiving the surveys in the mail at first with the rest of the state being polled next year.
Some past adjustments in deer management policies in the state have involved dates for hunting seasons as well as the number of antler-less deer that are allowed.
