How to Tackle Spring Cleaning in One Easy Step
Today is the day we've been waiting for, friends! Spring arrives at 5:58 p.m. and you know what that means, right? Time to throw open the windows, slip into junk clothes, find your cleaning gloves, and get to work! That's right, it's time to start getting serious about tackling all the cleaning that we neglected over the long winter months. If the idea of scrubbing the house from top to bottom is enough to make you want to cry, I've got a tip from an organizing expert that might change the way you feel.
Marie Kondo is a Netflix sensation and expert at organizing. Unlike the majority of the world, Kondo actually likes to clean and has even written a best-selling book called, 'The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.' So, what's her one big piece of advice to get moving on spring cleaning?
Dump it. Just get rid of everything.
Okay, maybe throwing out everything in your house isn't the best idea, but Kondo says that unloading most of your stuff will make you feel so much better.
I'm in the process of doing just this. My husband and I have taken no less than 30 contractor bags filled with stuff to Thrifty Shopper and it feels amazing. Sure, there's a tiny tinge of sadness when it comes to letting go of things that have surrounded you for any length of time, in our case, six years, but it also feels so freeing.
Kondo suggested that you should dump out (or donate) the stuff in your junk drawers, as well as any books, gifts, or clothes that you're not completely and totally in love with because let's face it- that stuff is just taking up space that could be used for things you actually like.
Even if you've tucked your clutter away, you know it's still there, right? We used to have a junk room in our house (or unused third bedroom) and we used it as a storage space. Every time I would walk by the room I would feel anxious because I knew what clutter was tucked away behind the door. Now that we've purged and organized that room, I walk by and can't help but peek in the room and smile. It feels like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. You should give purging a try. I think you'll find it's not so bad after all.
