Last year, most of the Special Olympics New York fundraising events had to go virtual because of the coronavirus pandemic. The good news is that in 2021, we are back to more in-person events and I think that's awesome.

For more than 50 years, Special Olympics New York has given year-round sports training and athletic competition in many Olympic-style sports for kids and adults with intellectual disabilities.

They partner with 250 schools throughout New York to offer Unified Sports. These programs are offered at no cost to athletes, their families, or caregivers. I've been fortunate to be a part of this in a small way. I've had the opportunity to officiate in the Unified summer basketball program in the Southern Tier.

Watching these kids in competition and having fun together is truly something special to see. This gives them a chance to develop physical fitness, experience joy, and participate in authentic competition.

"Go For The Gold" Fundraising Event To Benefit Special Olympics New York

This Friday morning, September 17th, Dunkin' will be hosting a fundraising event to benefit Special Olympics New York. Southern Tier athletes and coaches will join with local law enforcement partners at many Dunkin' restaurants to collect donations for Special Olympics New York.

Dunkin' will be giving out a coupon for a free donut as a way to say "thanks" when you donate to this awesome organization. Many locations in Broome County will be involved on Friday morning including the Dunkin' at 1315 Front Street in Binghamton.

All contributions will support Special Olympics New York programs for Southern Tier families. The Owego police department, members of the Sheriff's office road patrol, and others will be at Dunkin in Owego and Apalachin from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. with all donations going directly to Special Olympics New York.

By the way, the Special Olympics Fall Sports will return to Glens Falls on October 22nd and 23rd after a 6-year absence because of budget cuts. So stop by Dunkin' on Friday and help send our local athletes to this awesome competition.
