Southern Tier Heart Walk Set for Sunday, April 5

The annual Southern Tier Heart Walk is scheduled for Sunday, April 5 on the SUNY Broome campus.  The Walk begins and ends at the SUNY Broome Ice Center.  Individuals and teams alike are invited to participate. Proceeds raised from the Walk benefit the American Heart Association and help to provide funding for prevention, education and advocacy.

According to information from the American Heart Association heart disease is the number one killer in the United States.  Stroke is the number five killer in our country.  Heart disease causes more deaths than the next four leading causes of death combined.

Medical experts say heart disease is 80 percent preventable. Latest statistics show that every 38 seconds someone dies from heart disease and every 40 seconds someone suffers a stroke.  According to the American Heart Association more than 60 percent of Americans are overweight or obese and one in three kids and teens in America is overweight or obese.

You can also register on site beginning at 10:00 AM on the morning of the walk. Individuals and teams are welcome.  There will be numerous heart healthy displays inside the Ice Center.

Opening ceremonies begin at 11:30 AM directly in front of the Ice Center. WNBF's Roger Neel will broadcast live on location leading up to the start of the Walk.
