It’s been a dark week in the Southern Tier with new reports every day of more residents dying as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

For the fourth straight day this week, Tioga County November 5 reported more deaths.  Two more residents died on November 4 bringing Tioga County’s death toll to 39. The deadliest day for Tioga County was when officials reported November 3 that the death toll jumped by three.

Delaware was the only county in the region not to report a fatality for the week starting November 1. Delaware reported four new cases during its November 5 report for a total of 205 since the start of the pandemic.

Broome County November 5 reported 44 new cases for a total of 3,740. The death toll remains at 104.  Chenango County added two cases for a total of 432. The death toll remains at 9. Cortland County added two cases for a total of 896.  The death toll from the county report is at one.

New York State is due to review its micro-clusters of infections November 6.  Parts of Broome County are in the yellow zone cautionary designation with limits on public gatherings and the number of people who can sit together to dine out.  County Executive Jason Garnar says Broome is making progress in bringing infection rates down and hopes the region can be taken out of the yellow zone in another couple weeks.
