Binghamton officials are taking more action to prevent group gatherings in city parks to slow the spread of coronavirus.

Mayor Richard David said the city is "ramping up our efforts to really enforce social distancing."

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program Monday, David said city park rangers will be deployed starting next week.

The city hires high school and college students to serve as rangers, usually starting Memorial Day weekend.

The mayor said the rangers will help the police monitor parks to ensure people are complying with all guidelines.

David said new signage has been installed to educate park visitors about social distancing rules.

Parks department employees also removed rims from basketball hoops after a series of complaints that the courts were being utilized by people who ignored the distancing guidelines.

City parks are open for walking, jogging and biking. Playgrounds and sporting facilities are closed.
