Slow Moving Farm Equipment Returns to So. Tier Roadways

Delaware County Sheriff’s officials are reminding motorists that it’s the season for farm equipment to return to roadways.

The entire Twin Tiers is home to numerous farms and authorities say motorists in all counties in the region should be alert for slow-moving vehicles on the road.

Delaware County Sheriff Craig DuMond says drivers need to recognize how to safely share the road with all types of farm equipment as statistics show over 90% of slow moving vehicle collisions happen during daylight hours and happen when farm equipment is hit from behind as motorists try to pass.

In addition to keeping in mind the amount of time it takes to pass farm equipment or even horse-drawn buggies, drivers should know it’s still illegal to pass slow moving vehicles in no passing zones.

Motorists should slow down immediately when they encounter SMVs and increase their following distance.  Be alert for unexpected turns, possibly into a field without a clear driveway access, be aware that the operators of the vehicles may have limited visibility due to loads and equipment and be aware that some equipment in tow may sway.

Above all, while being stuck behind a farm tractor may be frustrating, patience is not only a virtue but may be a life-saver.
