Man Charged After Broome Violent Assault, Police Chase and Crash
A suspect in a violent attack at a Broome County home was taken into custody after a high-speed chase on Interstate 81 ended when a stolen car smashed into a vehicle and a pole.
Authorities say 29-year-old Matthew Bonser of Nanticoke, Pennsylvania was treated at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City after the crash.
Bonser has been charged with assault, burglary and robbery. He also was charged as a fugitive from justice because he was wanted in Pennsylvania.
According to New York State Police, Bonser is believed to have broken into a residence on Ellerson Road in the town of Barker shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday. A 71-year-old man was injured when he confronted the intruder.
Investigators say Bonser ran to a home on Route 11 and threatened a person with a knife to obtain car keys. He stole the vehicle and drove away.
A Broome County sheriff's deputy spotted the car and began to pursue it. State police later joined the high-speed pursuit.
The stolen car crashed into an uninvolved vehicle and a pole on Colesville Road near I-81 in the town of Kirkwood. The 87-year-old man who was driving the other vehicle was taken to Wilson Medical Center for treatment.
Bonser was treated for his injuries and then processed at the state police Kirkwood station.
