Senator on David Sweat’s Hunger Strike: Oh Well
A state senator took to Twitter to slam a man convicted in the killing of a Broome County sheriff's deputy who now is reportedly refusing to eat at Attica state prison.
The New York Post reported Friday night that David Sweat is on a hunger strike because he's "not happy" he was transferred from the Five Points Correctional Facility in Romulus.
Senator Fred Akshar on Saturday afternoon made it clear what he thinks about the 37-year-old Sweat, who is serving a life sentence in connection with the 2002 death of sheriff's deputy Kevin Tarsia.
Akshar tweeted: "What a repugnant, disgusting and vile human being." The senator, who had served as Broome County undersheriff, wrote: "I say 'Oh Well' let us not forget that Sweat has forever starved the Tarsia family of a life without their beloved son."
Akshar's message concluded with: "#KeepSweatinAttica where he belongs."
Sweat and another killer escaped from a state prison in 2015. He was captured after being on the run for nearly a month.
According to the Post story, Sweat lost seven pounds a week after his hunger strike began. The newspaper reported prison officials are seeking a court order to be able to feed the inmate through a tube.
