Binghamton police have issued a warning about people pretending to be with the city department while using a spoofed caller ID.

The phone scam alert was released after reports of such calls that were received on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The callers claimed to be with the Binghamton police department. The caller ID displayed was an actual number of the agency's administration office.

The would-be scammers sought credit card information or tried to sell gift cards. Police said the operation is being investigated.

People who receive a similar call or those with information about the same may contact the Binghamton police detective division at (607) 772-7080.
