A man who has been active with preservation efforts in the region will be the next Broome County historian.

Roger Luther has been appointed to the post by County Executive Jason Garnar.

Luther will succeed Gerald Smith, who retired in January after serving as county historian for more than three decades.

Luther serves as executive director of the Preservation Association of the Southern Tier. He's been active in that organization and in the Broome County Historical Society for many years.

Luther recently published two books about local history: "Expressions of Faith - Exploring the Religious Structures of Broome County" and "Treasures of the Tier - Exploring Historic Properties in the Southern Tier."

The appointment to the historian post is expected to be acted on by the county legislature next month.

Roger Luther and Gerald Smith are scheduled to appear on WNBF Radio's "Binghamton Now" program on Friday, February 15 at 10:10 a.m.
