The man who had been manager of the Johnson City Wegmans store for nearly two decades has died.

Richard Gilbert, who lived in Owego, died on Monday. He was 56.

According to a published obituary, Gilbert worked for Wegmans for 37 years. He started working at the Harry L. Drive store when it opened in August 1990. He served as manager of the Johnson City store since 2001.

Gilbert was born in Syracuse. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Gilbert; and three children, Devon Gilbert, Jacob Gilbert and Lauren Gilbert.

After a major store remodeling project was completed a few years ago, Gilbert was proud of what workers had accomplished at the store in a short period of time. He was so pleased with the outcome of the project, he spent about an hour giving a reporter a complete tour of the store.

Gilbert's family will receive friends Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Estey, Munroe and Fahey Funeral Home in Owego.

Life celebration services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
