Wear and tear is a major part of owning and driving a car, and some of it can get you pulled over.

If your New York State license plate is peeling from wear and tear, it could get you a ticket.

If your plate is peeling and is "unreadable" you could wind up getting pulled over and issued a citation. Luckily, its fixable and free.

The Department of Motor Vehicles will help you out and fix and issue your peeling license plate for free.

Snap a picture of your peeling plates and contact the DMV or Custom Plates Unit at 518-402-4838.

If you want to keep the same license plate number, there is a charge of $20.

The DMV does say they will replace plates that are becoming "delaminated" for free. Other wear and tear problems like cracking and fading may require an additional fee.
