Two supermarket chains based in upstate New York have announced they'll join forces to operate under a single parent company.

Price Chopper and Tops Markets said they have agreed to a merger that would nearly double "their collective footprint in the Northeast."

Price Chopper operates about 130 grocery stores, including units in Binghamton, Endicott, Chenango Bridge and Owego. Tops Markets has 162 stores, including one in Owego.

The headquarters for the merged entity will be in Schenectady, where Price Chopper is based. Tops Markets will retain its main office in Erie County.

Existing stores are expected to continue to operate under their current names.

Price Chopper and Tops now have a combined total of more than 32,000 employees. The merger announcement did not indicate whether job cuts are expected or whether some store locations will be closed.
