President Donald Trump has announced that all Boeing 737 Max 8 and 9 jets are being taken out of service "effective immediately."

The announcement came Wednesday afternoon. Trump, speaking at the White House, said "the safety of the American people and all people is our paramount concern."

The decision by the United States government follows last weekend's deadly Ethiopian Airlines crash.

Many airlines and governments around the world already had decided to ground the Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft as the investigation into the latest incident was getting started.

A Lion Air 737 Max 8 crashed into the Java Sea last October.

Trump said Boeing is "working very, very hard right now" to "come up with the answer" regarding the safety of the new Max 8.

The president said "until they do, the planes around grounded."
