A Johnson City man is facing several misdemeanor charges but the activity surrounding his arrest raised alarm in one Binghamton neighborhood.

Broome County Sheriff’s officials say they attempted to arrest 25-year-old Nicholas Tomassetti at around 2:30 p.m. June 25 following a shoplifting report at Lowes on Upper Front Street in the Town of Chenango.

Tomassetti reportedly took off in a Toyota Highlander driving on Interstate 81 and into the First Ward where he eventually fled into Saint Michael’s parking lot off Clinton Street. He ditched the vehicle and ran off on foot.

He was chased over a chain link fence onto the railroad tracks, running west.  He scaled another chain link fence into the Big Lots parking lot off Glenwood Avenue where deputies took him into custody.  Authorities say they found he was wanted on warrants in Binghamton for petit larceny and in Bradford County, Pennsylvania for theft of property.
