Pit bulls get a very bad rap, and I'm not here trying to argue for them & that it isn't all about the breed but in fact the owner. Instead I'm writing about the kindness of a group of police officers! First I want to say that I have three dogs, and while Lola is my baby, my most well behaved dog is my pit bull Nikko, who we adopted from an animal shelter after he was labeled 'beaten and battered.'

There are plenty of programs out there that aim at trying to show that pit bulls aren't completely vicious and just want love and attention like any other dog breed. One program in particular is the 'Universal K9' which trains pit bulls to be official police canines!

For dogs to receive the training and adoption by police departments is VERY VERY expensive and generally departments don't have the budget. But what they have come to learn is that certain dog breeds are less expensive to train/adopt, yet pick up on the training just the same as other breeds.

So police departments have been gradually adopting more pit bulls and training them to be police K9s!!!! To give you a price visual, it costs about $10,000 to $15,000 for a trained Belgian, and less than a few hundred to take these pit bulls from shelters and train them!

"Pit bulls are incredibly obedient and can be trained to do almost anything that their owners need, so it only makes sense that they would be great police dogs!" says Protect Pit Bulls from BSL online. (breed-specific legislation).

While these cuties continue to get a bad rap, it's nice to see there are organizations out there (a big one being police departments) that are trying to break these assumptions and utilize the incredible talents of pit bulls!!!
