Owego Bridge Rehabilitation Complete But What is Route 960J?
New York officials are celebrating the completion of a big road project in Tioga County but even some emergency services workers are at a loss to say just what road the governor is talking about.
New York State is celebrating the completion of a multi-million dollar project to replace the Route 960J superstructures in the Town of Owego.
The $11.6-million dollar project on three bridges carrying, what pretty much no one calls: "Route 960J", over Route 17, 17C and the Susquehanna River got underway at the end of last July. If you ask the locals where they were finding the big detour for almost a year, they will tell you it was Hiawatha Bridge.
Governor Andrew Cuomo, in announcing the completion of the project, said the rehabilitated bridges are “true gateways to everything that keeps the Southern Tier soaring.”
Route 960J connects the businesses and industry along route 17C like Lockheed Martin and the Owego Treadway Inn and provides bike paths and access to Hickories Park.
The project replaced the bridge decks, improved drainage and installed two, 11-foot wide lanes and wider shoulders to make the road safer for bicycles and pedestrians.
