Binghamton shoppers and office workers who have been looking forward to using the new $11 million parking garage will have to wait a bit longer.

Mayor Richard David had expected the 304-space facility to go into service this month. But it now appears the ramp at Hawley and State streets will open in early January.

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, David said most of the construction work has been completed but some interior painting remained to be done.

The mayor said internet and telephone equipment still must be installed at the structure. An elevator inspection also has not been completed.

David said last week's massive snowstorm caused some delays affecting the garage project. The structure was constructed with dozens of precast concrete segments transported to the site from Massachusetts.
