An abandoned structure in Binghamton's First Ward has been torn down to make way for a new storage complex.

The building at 181 Clinton Street had been vacant for more than five years. It most recently had been used by Broome County as an office for Department of Motor Vehicle transactions.

Rogers Service Group purchased the property from the county in 2017. The company has been planning to build a new storage facility at the site.

Ron Rogers told city officials that the company had "outgrown the space" it currently uses to store records at 245 Clinton Street.

The company has indicated it intends to construct a 30,000-square-foot record storage building on the site of the old DMV office. The new complex could hold up to 400,000 boxes of records.

Workers from Gorick Construction began demolition work at the site this week.
