No Suspects Reported in West Endicott Fire Investigation
No arrests have been made in connection with a blaze at an abandoned motel in the town of Union.
Monday afternoon's fire in the former Red Carpet Inn on West Main Street in West Endicott was discovered by a Broome County sheriff's deputy.
The deputy was sent to the old motel near the En Joie Golf Club after someone spotted two girls and a boy trying to enter the building. She discovered several unsecured doors while checking the property.
As the deputy entered the east side of the building, she discovered a hallway filled with smoke and called for the fire department.
Firefighters from three departments responded and extinguished the blaze. Authorities say it appeared someone had set a mattress on fire. The damage was confined to one room.
A short time later, the deputy located two youths walking on West Main Street near the fire scene. They admitted they had entered a room on the west side of the building but said they weren't responsible for the fire.
The incident remains under investigation.
