New Owner Hopes to Renovate Closed West Endicott Motel

A rundown motel across the street from En Joie Golf Club could resume operations under a plan being pursued by the owner of the town of Union property.

Rakesh Shroff has proposed remodeling the old Red Carpet Inn at 749 West Main Street in West Endicott.

Shorff is the principal of OM Shirdi Sai LLC of New Jersey which acquired the site in November 2019 for $325,000.

When it opened as the Royal Coachman Motel in April 1963, it was billed as "ultramodern" and the Southern Tier's first "all-electric" lodging place.

The motel operated under a series of owners and names for several decades before it fell into disrepair.

Shorff is planning to use $350,000 in federal American Rescue Plan Act funds allocated through the Town of Union Local Development Corporation to help cover some of the cost of the project.

Workers were busy at the closed motel last January gutting a small section of the closed motel's first floor to develop a "model room."

For now, Shorff is concentrating his attention on operating a motel he owns in New Jersey. He said the Broome County project was delayed to issues related to the pandemic. He noted he is still shorthanded as he focuses on the existing business.

Shorff told WNBF News he's hoping construction work at the former Red Carpet Inn can get underway next spring.
