The New York State Department of Transportation is looking to add to its fluorescent yellow ranks for the upcoming season.

The DOT says there are about 470 positions as permanent and seasonal maintenance staff across Upstate and Long Island.

The Department of Transportation begins hiring in September of each year and trains staff on equipment and best practices to prepare for winter weather.

Applications are being accepted for Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2.  Returning seasonal workers and retirees qualify for Highway Maintenance Worker One position.

The DOT plans to hire 34 employees in the Western Southern Tier, 57 in the Eastern Southern Tier and 34 in Central New York.

The New York State DOT employs about 2,900 full time snow and ice operators and supervisors as well as an estimated 300 seasonal operators responsible for pretreating, plowing and removing ice from over 34,000 miles of roadway.
