New Supermarket Coming to Old Johnson City “Giant” Site
A building near the Oakdale Mall that has housed supermarkets in the past soon will be home to another grocery store.
Construction crews Monday began working at the site of a former Giant store at 560 Harry L. Drive in Johnson City.
People familiar with the project say a portion of the old supermarket is being renovated for use as an Aldi store.
Aldi is expected to close a nearby store it operates at 619 Main Street in Westover when the new store opens.
The Harry L. Drive property is located just east of the mall. It has been mostly vacant since Weis Markets closed a store at the site in 2014. Weis had acquired the Giant store at the location five years earlier. It has been used in recent years as for a seasonal store that sold Halloween merchandise.
The property still is owned by Binghamton Giant Markets of Vestal. A company representative declined to comment on the new project. Aldi officials could not be reached for comment.
