After years of discussion and planning, a rundown hotel on Endicott's Washington Avenue is being torn down.

The village last March was awarded state money to cover the cost of demolishing the old Endicott Inn.

A ceremony marking the start of the project was held Monday. In recent months, Endicott Mayor John Bertoni had said he was looking forward to seeing the eyesore removed.

A few people continued to reside in the two-story 57-room complex until several weeks ago. Developer Justin Marchuska said the final residents left the building in late December.

The property was acquired by Ramco Development and Holdings for $550,000.

The demolition of the former hotel and an adjacent restaurant facility is expected to create a shovel-ready site for a new "brand-name hotel."

According to a document released by New York state, the $8 million project is to develop a "lodging facility designed to attract the younger traveler."
