Broome County Sheriff’s officials say shortly after 12 a.m. May 10 they got reports of a vehicle theft from the Octagon Inn on Route 26 in Nanticoke and someone driving around in a nearby cemetery that didn’t have any drive paths.

Deputies say they found 60-year-old Larry Barton still in the cemetery.

According to investigators, Barton apparently mistakenly took someone else’s vehicle when he was leaving the Octagon Inn and was headed home when he became lost and turned into a cemetery that didn’t have any roads, knocking into headstones.

The owner of the vehicle decided not to press charges after learning who took their car but Barton is charged with drunk driving and criminal mischief for the damage to the cemetery.

He was released with several tickets and ordered to return to Town of Nanticoke Court at a later date.
