Legal Benefits Of Marriage That You Don’t Think Of
For many couples, marriage is the opportunity to explore and deepen the bond between two people as you both grow old together. Brit.Co says that there are some interesting legal benefits that go along with marriage that you may not have thought of before.
- State tax benefits which can be useful to know this time of the year as you file your taxes before April's deadline. Married couples can actually save money on their state taxes when they file jointly.
- Healthcare and family leave is an interesting one because spouses (not just long-term partners) have special rights in making emergency decisions for their husband or wife. They can also see them in the hospital when they're ill as opposed to a partner in a relationship who may not be able to have the same visitation rights.
- Spousal privilege is lesser known, but it means that in a legal proceeding, you have the right to a private conversation with your spouse. You can excuse yourself from testifying in trial to speak to your husband or wife and that entire conversation is protected by law.
Hopefully you or your spouse will never be in a tight legal situation, but if you are, it's important to know your rights!
