A murder trial is underway for a Johnson City man who has been accused of causing the death of his girlfriend’s 11-year-old son in 2019, drug possession, sexual assault against a child and rape.

46-year-old Larry Harris was arrested in March of 2019 and charged with murder in the death of 11-year-old Jerome Smith on February 2 of that year.

The child was found unresponsive at a home on Burbank Avenue and Harris was said to have been living at that location at the time.

He was charged with possessing cocaine following a search of a Binghamton apartment a month after the fifth-grader’s death.

Later, while Harris was being held on the previous charges, a victim came forward alleging sex crimes took place between October 2013 and March of 2019.

Prosecutors said that Harris would be tried separately for Smith’s death, the drug charges and the alleged sex crimes.

Officials with the Broome County District Attorney's Office have confirmed that the trial currently underway is dealing with the murder charge.
