JC Officials Prepared to Double Their Salaries in New Budget

The village mayor and trustees in Johnson City could receive a 100% pay increase in a few weeks.

Johnson City's tentative budget for the fiscal year starting June 1 would double the salaries of village officials.

The mayor's pay would rise from $12,000 a year to $24,000 a year. The proposed salaries for the village's four trustees would increase from $5,000 to $10,000 a year.

Johnson City village officials say the pay for the mayor and the trustees has not been adjusted in 15 years.

A public hearing on the proposed Johnson City budget will be held during a special board of trustees meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Some village residents have been highly critical of the move to implement a 100% pay hike in a single action.

Trustee Adam Brown said he intends to vote against the big pay hike. He said while raises are appropriate, "doing it all at once isn't justified."

Trustees John Walker and Mary Jacyna did not indicate whether they would vote in favor of the increases as proposed. Trustee Clark Giblin and Mayor Martin Meaney could not be reached for comment on the planned raises.
