Village police say Geneva, a pitbull, sustained a minor laceration in the Monday afternoon attack on Grand Avenue.

Investigators say Geneva was "happy to see the police and is in good spirits." The dog was being treated for the injury.

Authorities say 47-year-old Samuel Lambert initially was believed to have stabbed the dog in self-defense after he was bitten. But detectives later determined Lambert attacked the dog and later tried to assault its owner.

Lambert had been charged with attempted assault, criminal possession of a weapon and menacing. Police say he now faces an additional charge of overdriving, torturing and injuring animals. That charge is a misdemeanor under the state Agriculture and Markets Law.
