JC Wegmans Entrance Gets New Turn Lane to Ease Traffic Congestion
Construction crews are putting the finishing touches on a project designed to address some traffic issues that occur at the main entrance to the Wegmans store in Johnson City.
An additional left turn lane is a key part of the upgrade work on Harry L. Drive just west of the Route 201-Reynolds Road intersection.
Johnson City officials discussed traffic flow challenges with representatives of Wegmans and the developers of the Oakdale Commons.
Mayor Martin Meaney said last April said the single left-turn lane into Wegmans backs up during peak-traffic periods resulting in gridlock near the intersection just north of a Route 17 exit.
The mayor told WNBF News the goal would be to reduce problems caused by congestion as people headed to Wegmans and to the Oakdale Commons.
Traffic volume has increased on Harry L. Drive in recent weeks with the opening of Dick's Sporting Goods House of Sport, along with Chipotle Mexican Grill and Panera Bread restaurants at the regional shopping center.
Wegmans manager David Orlovsky said he's happy with the improvements at the entrance that should help customers as they arrive at the store.
Johnson City officials said the paving, striping and traffic signal work is being performed from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. They said drivers should expect delays while the project is underway.
