The Final Takeout at The Spot Diner Near Binghamton
It was takeout time again at The Spot Diner Restaurant in the town of Chenango. This time, though, people stopped in to pick up items they purchased in an auction.
The popular eatery on Upper Front Street just north of Binghamton closed last October after serving Broome County residents and people traveling through the region for several decades.
Restaurant owner Spyros Dimatos told WNBF News he made the "painful" decision to shut down The Spot because of difficult business conditions.
Restaurant equipment, coolers and hundreds of dining chairs were among the items sold at an online auction over the past couple of weeks. Matthew Manasse of Manasse Auctioneers said there were nearly 300 registered bidders for the sale.
Those who made winning bids showed up with trucks and trailers Thursday and Friday to pick up the items they bought.
Two women who made purchases are planning to open a restaurant in Groton. Others who were at The Spot said they would use some of the equipment and furnishings in businesses they already operate.
Although The Spot is closed, an eight-unit Tesla Supercharger remains in service in the parking lot.
The property - which includes two-and-a-half acres of land - has been listed for sale with an asking price of $1 million.
