More Binghamton Plaza Businesses Close as Court Battle Looms
As the city of Binghamton pushes forward with its effort to seize a North Side retail site, additional shops are closing their doors.
The Binghamton Plaza eminent domain proceedings are moving forward with additional hearings expected to be held this summer.
Plaza property manager John Tokos said several small businesses are continuing to operate at the West State Street site.
But two businesses - Extreme Bargain Bins and Bargain Grocery Outlet - have gone dark, apparently because of the uncertainty surrounding the future of the plaza.
In a social media post, Extreme Bargain Bins advised customers that "a business decision has been made to temporarily close the store while we await the results of the plaza owner’s case appeal."
The post indicated if the property owners win, the store would be prepared to make a "sizeable investment" to open a bigger site in the plaza.
The owners of New York Pizzeria, which has been a fixture at the plaza for more than 20 years, are continuing to consider their options.
The husband and wife who have operated the Leather Corner Shoe Repair at the site for more than a half century say they're waiting to find out what happens with the legal case.
