A Broome County resident with a lengthy criminal history is to be sentenced to prison after he admitted he assaulted a New York state trooper.

Prosecutors said Dylan Shoemaker of Chenango Forks fought with troopers who were investigating a domestic dispute on February 6. The incident happened in a home on Perch Pond Road in Windsor.

Police were trying to take Shoemaker into custody when he fought with troopers. He punched one trooper in the face. That trooper was cut by glass as he wrestled the man to the ground. The injured trooper was treated at a hospital and released.

According to the Broome County District Attorney's Office, Shoemaker has pleaded guilty to second-degree assault. Under the plea agreement, he is expected to be sentenced to 12 years to life in state prison.

A news release from district attorney Michael Korchak indicates Shoemaker's criminal history includes a felony attempted robbery conviction in 2010 and attempted burglary in 2014. He also was convicted of attempted assault in a 2014 attack on a fellow inmate at Broome County Jail.

Shoemaker will be sentenced as a persistent violent felony offender.

Korchak said the state trooper was not seriously hurt and has returned to work.

In early September, Shoemaker was being sought by the Broome County Sheriff's Office on an outstanding warrant.
