Limited Lane Access on Binghamton Bridge Over Next Five Days
In a press release sent to Townsquare Media Binghamton, the office of Broome County Executive Jason Garnar reports that the VFW Memorial Bevier Street Bridge in Broome County suffered minor damage due to a fire that was set underneath it during last night's overnight hours.
Quick action by the Binghamton Fire Department managed to extinguish the flames, but as a result of the incident, the bridge has been temporarily closed off to all traffic.
Broome County's Department of Public Works (DPW) Commissioner, Roger Brown, P.E., has confirmed that the bridge is currently undergoing inspection by county engineers, with support from the New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT).
It is expected that the bridge will partially reopen later today, with a center lane closure. However, motorists should anticipate limited-lane access over the next five days as inspections and any necessary repairs are carried out. Whenever feasible, drivers should seek alternative routes to alleviate congestion and minimize delays.
While the VFW Memorial Bevier Street Bridge receives the necessary attention, the south entrance to Otsiningo Park, located near the bridge, is expected to reopen later today and there are no anticipated changes to the Festival of Lights schedule. All planned events and activities at the Broome County Festival of Lights will proceed as scheduled.
Authorities will provide updates and information to ensure that the community can plan their commuting routes accordingly. Investigations into the incident are currently underway to determine the cause of the fire.
