A police officer found a wounded person lying on the pavement next to a blue car that was stopped on Fayette Street between the stadium and post office.

The victim reportedly had been shot in the face. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement released Friday night, Detective Captain Cory Minor said the victim was a 20-year-old man. He had been driving the car when he was shot, causing the vehicle to crash.

Emotions ran high at a perimeter marked by yellow crime scene tape at the intersection of Fayette and Henry streets.

Relatives and friends of those involved pleaded with police to provide information about what had happened. City police officers were assisted by state troopers in preventing people from rushing to the spot where the victim's body was covered.

Broome County sheriff's deputies also assisted Binghamton police on downtown streets as people gathered in the aftermath of the shooting.

Minor released no information on possible suspects or a description of the vehicle used to leave the scene.

People with information about the shooting may contact the Binghamton police detective bureau at (607) 772-7080.
