The incident occurred a few minutes after noon Tuesday when a group of people walking west on Main Street became involved in an argument with others in the area.
A Binghamton man said his 26-year-old wife was "jumped" and assaulted by person armed with a knife. He said she initially was punched in the face. She then was slashed on the side of her head and a stabbed in the back.
The injured woman was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City. Her condition was not available.

The attack happened about a half block west of the high school, which was locked down after the incident as a precaution.
Shortly after the stabbing, a large motor home struck the side of an unmarked Binghamton police vehicle that was parked near the scene of the attack. No injuries were reported as a result of the crash.
Detectives placed several yellow evidence markers on between the Masonic Temple building and a Family Dollar store before taking photographs.
Main Street was closed between Oak and Murray streets for more than an hour while police processed the crime scene.
