Binghamton Cannabis Production Facility Concept Still Alive
Binghamton officials are working to lay the groundwork for a new cannabis cultivation and manufacturing operation in the city.
The concept of developing such a facility remains alive, although a future project may not involve the California company that publicly expressed an interest in Binghamton.
Mayor Jared Kraham announced plans for a project in July 2022. He said a firm named STIIIZY was planning to enter into an option to purchase agreement for a site in the First Ward.
The 8.2-acre parcel is between Charles Street and West Street. The land is part of the Charles Street Business Park. The site has been vacant for decades since the abandoned Anitec Image Corporation manufacturing complex was demolished.
Kraham was asked about the status of the potential cannabis project during a WNBF Radio interview. He said: "No pun intended but the embers are still burning on that" concept.
But the mayor added that a future project may not be pursued by STIIIZY. He said there still is interest from cannabis cultivators and manufacturers to use the Charles Street site.
Kraham noted the state will soon be opening up opportunities for people interested in getting involved in that part of the cannabis business.
The Charles Street property is owned by the Binghamton Local Development Corporation.
Binghamton's zoning ordinance permits different types of legal cannabis operations is specific parts of the city. Those types include industrial, retail and on-site consumption businesses.
