Get Ready to Rock Your Red: Raise Awareness for Southern Tier Women and Heart Disease
Write this down on your calendar or in your phone and get ready to wear whatever you have in your closet that is red! This Friday, February 2nd, UHS in Vestal is hosting a "Wear Red Day" event beginning at 10 a.m. along with the American Heart Association at 4417 Vestal Parkway in Vestal.
Heart disease affects women more than you might know and that's where "Wear Red Day" comes in. It's about prevention and treatment for this easily overlooked issue. You are encouraged to wear red to this event in the main lobby of UHS Vestal, to support this important cause.
There will be speakers at the event that'll talk about their personal experiences. John M. Carrigg, the president and CEO of UHS, will also share about his battle against heart disease.
Heather Dorn, a Binghamton University writer and lecturer, will tell her own story of battling heart disease at a young age. Family nurse practitioner Jessie Flurschutz, representing the UHS Heart & Vascular Institute, and Jami Wood, regional director of the American Heart Association will bring their expertise to the table.
'Wear Red Day' Highlights
One of the highlights of this year's "Wear Red Day" will be teaching cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). UHS will be giving away CPR training kits to local school districts and nonprofit organizations. They're not just raising awareness; they're giving everyone the tools to help save lives.
Did you know that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States? It's responsible for over 314,000 female deaths each year, accounting for around one in every five female deaths.
The good news is that education and changes in lifestyles can help prevent heart disease. The American Heart Association's "Go Red for Women" campaign, is all about increasing awareness of women's heart health.
So, participate in "Wear Red Day," you'll be looking good and letting everyone know that you're making a stand for women's heart health. That's something to be proud of!
