The Broome County Health Department is reminding people that it’s a great time to get your flu shot. This annual week happens every year because a lot of people tend to forget about flu vaccines once November passes.

Flu Season Isn’t the Same Every Year

Every flu season looks a little different. Last year around this time, New York State reported just over 1,000 flu cases with 44 hospitalizations, and Broome County had 17 cases. This year, the numbers are already higher.

New York State has reported about 2,400 cases and 110 hospitalizations, while Broome County is at 23 cases. Even though the local increase is small, the jump statewide is a good reminder that the flu is spreading.

Why Getting Vaccinated Now Still Matters

It takes about two weeks after getting the flu shot for your body to build full protection. Getting vaccinated now means you’ll be protected before holiday travel, gatherings, and all that extra time spent indoors with other people.

The Flu Shot Really Does Help

The annual flu vaccine is still the best defense we have against influenza. Studies show it can lower your risk of serious illness by up to 60%. And it’s not just about you. When more people get vaccinated, it helps protect those in the community who can’t, or who are more likely to get very sick from the flu.

Who Should Especially Get It

The flu shot is recommended every season for everyone 6 months and older. It’s especially important for babies, pregnant people, older adults, anyone with chronic health conditions, and people with weakened immune systems. These groups can have a harder time fighting off the flu if they get sick.

How to Find a Flu Shot Near You

Scheduling a flu shot is pretty easy. You can call your doctor, a local pharmacy, or another healthcare provider. You can also visit vaccinefinder.org to quickly find locations near you offering the flu vaccine. An appointment now can help make the rest of your winter a whole lot smoother.
