Upstate New Yorkers Looking for an AI Career Should Learn These Skills
Artificial intelligence jobs are growing across New York and the country, but a new study shows that learning "AI" isn't enough anymore. Researchers at Skillenai looked at more than 3,200 job postings to see what employers are looking for when hiring Data Scientists, Machine Learning Engineers, and AI Engineers.
Python Is Still the Best Place to Start
For anyone in Upstate New York thinking about a career in AI, one skill continues to stand above the rest: Python. The programming language appeared in most of the job postings for all three careers, making it one of the most valuable skills for people entering the field.
Different AI Jobs Require Different Skills
The study found that Data Scientists spend much of their time working with data, statistics, and business questions. Employers often look for skills like SQL, data analysis, and predictive modeling. Machine Learning Engineers focus on building and training AI models.

Job postings commonly mention tools like PyTorch, TensorFlow, and deep learning. AI Engineers are more likely to build AI powered apps and features that people use every day. Employers are looking for skills like prompt engineering, large language models, TypeScript, and tools that help AI systems run smoothly after they are released.
AI Hiring Is Becoming More Specialized
Researchers say one of the biggest changes is that AI careers are no longer one size fits all. Instead of asking people to simply "learn AI," employers are looking for workers with skills that match a specific role.
A Growing Opportunity for Upstate New Yorkers
Whether you're a college student in Binghamton, or someone considering a career change, the demand for AI skills continues to grow. The study suggests that understanding the differences between AI careers and focusing on the right skills could give Upstate New York job seekers an edge as more companies expand their use of artificial intelligence.
