I recently wrote an article on hiking and enjoying trails around the Southern Tier now that spring is here and the weather is getting better. Spring is a great time to get outside and take a nice walk or hike after a long winter of being stuck inside.

And while hiking is fun and great exercise, caution should be a part of your walk as well. You may be asking why. Well, there is a reason, especially this time of the year when we are transitioning from winter to spring conditions.

During early spring, it's also mud season, which can make for dangerous conditions at times. For example, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation notes that recently, an incident occurred at the Indian Pass Brook.

While returning to the Adirondak Loj, some hikers had to be rescued by New York State Forest Rangers after they found themselves in a predicament where they would not be able to cross the Indian Pass Brook due to chest-high waters.

The NYS DEC states that during mud season, snow can quickly melt and cause rising waterways.

Also, The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reminds us that if during your hikes or walks, you encounter a patch of mud on the trail, stick to the middle and walk through it.
