On July 25th, The New York State Department of Labor released preliminary local area unemployment rates for June 2023.

According to the NYS Department of Labor, the unemployment rates rely in part on the the results of the current population survey. These rates are calculated using methods from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In June of 2022, the unemployment rate for Binghamton was 3.6 percent. For June 2023, the rate was 3.4 percent. Compared with a total of 17 New York State metro areas, Binghamton ranks tied for third with the Watertown - Fort Drum metro area. (Rates not seasonally adjusted.)

New York City tops the list for June 2023 with an unemployment rate at 5.9 percent, up from 5.5 percent in June 0f 2022. Elmira lands at 2nd for the highest unemployment rate in New York State (1st in the Southern Tier) for June 2023 at 3.6 percent, same as 2022.

As far as New York State counties are concerned (there are 62 counties in the state) for June 2023, Broome County's unemployment rate was 3.5 percent. Tioga County stands at 2.9 percent, Delaware County is at 3.6 percent and Chenango County come in at 2.8 percent. (Not seasonally adjusted)

The NYS Department of Labor shows that in Broome County, the number of employed for June 2023 (numbers in thousands, not seasonally adjusted) was 80.3, which is  0.2 percent increase from June of 2022. Tioga County employed was 21.8, a 0.1 percent increase from June 2022.

For Delaware County, the number of employed for June 2023 was 18.4, down 0.2 percent from June of 2022 and Chenango County 21.7, up 0.2 percent from June 2022 (numbers in thousands, not seasonally adjusted.)
