Glimpse New Arrival Rare Wolves At Binghamton’s Ross Park Zoo
There are some new residents at Binghamton's Ross Park Zoo. Four residents to be exact.
On October 25th, Ross Park welcomed four Red Wolves to the pack. It's been several years since there have been new additions. The wolves include a 13-year-old male along with three sons, one 6 years old and the other two, 5 years old.
These red Wolves arrived from the Wolf Conservation Center in Salem, New York. they will be roaming the newly renovated Wolf Woods Habitat along with Karma, a long-time resident of the Ross Park Zoo.
The 13-year-old Red Wolf and Karma will be taking up residence in the lower yard of the Wolf Woods Habitat, while the three brothers will be roaming the upper yard. The upper yard is visible from the outside observation deck and inside the Wolf Woods Habitat building.
For visitors, the wolves should be more easily spotted with the addition of four more, along with the Autumn die-off of ground vegetation. The Wolf Woods indoor facility has been refurbished, is climate-controlled, and features large, tinted glass windows to observe the Ross Park Zoo's Red Wolves.
The Ross Park Zoo notes that in 1967, Red Wolves were listed as endangered, and in 1980 declared extinct in the wild. Currently, there are about 235 Red Wolves in 49 Red Wolf SAFE facilities in the United States.
This weekend will be a great time to welcome the Red Wolves during 'HalloWeekend' with the Ross Park Zoo and the Discovery Center of the Southern Tier. It's a family-friendly Halloween-themed weekend.
Times for 'HalloWeekend' are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both days, featuring games, crafts, costume contests, and treats. For information, visit the Discovery Center website. This weekend is also the final weekend for the Illumination for Conservation Lantern Festival at The Ross Park Zoo.
