Want To Get Naked in a New York Cave?
It's that time of year again. The birds are coming back, the weather is warming, and it's time to get tickets for Howe Caverns' Naked in a Cave event. This year's edition will take place on Saturday, September 28th 2024.
Located in the small town of Howes Cave in Schoharie County, New York, Howe Caverns has been a popular tourist attraction since around 1843. Farmer Lester Howe noticed his cows congregating at the bottom of a hill around some bushes. When Howe went to investigate, he found a cool breeze coming from a hole in the ground. Upon doing some digging, Howe found the entrance to the caves and explored them with a neighbor.
When Howe encountered financial difficulties, he sold off parts of his land to cover debts. A limestone quarry purchased the portion of land that contained the cave entrance, and it was eventually closed. An organization was created in 1927 to reopen it to the public. The caves were updated for safety, and visitors were welcomed back on Memorial Day Weekend 1929.
In its sixth year, Naked in a Cave has become a signature event, and attracts visitors from far and wide. The day is used to celebrate body positivity. Visitors stroll through the caves completely in the buff.
Tickets are capped at 350 guests and cost $85 each, and typically sell out very quickly. The price of admission includes one complimentary adult beverage (beer or wine), as well as a souvenir robe. Nice touch as the caves maintain a constant temperature of 52 degrees Fahrenheit. Tickets are available to those 21 and over.
Motel rooms will be offered this year by lottery. A dinner is available before the stroll at a separate charge. There will also be a ceramics class in conjunction with the event. New for this year is an appearance by comedian Steve Van Zandt who will present a stand-up show. Only Naked in a Cave ticket holders will have access to the show, and there is an additional fee.
