Volunteers canvass areas frequented by people who are facing shelter challenges like public spaces including bus terminals, stores and libraries and areas to sleep, sometimes barely sheltered from the elements.

The count includes six counties in the Southern Tier region including Broome, Tioga, Otsego and Cortland.

Last year 244 people, including 32 children were counted in the survey.

The numbers from the count are used to help determine public funding from sources like the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
