If you thought your kids weren't watching your every move and cataloging each and everything you do inside their little brains, think again.

My husband and I have (almost) always involved our son in making meals with us. Whether helping to slather mayonnaise on bread for sandwiches or sitting on the counter beside the stove to stir simmering sauce, our son is a constant presence in the kitchen with us.

Growing up, my favorite book was a vintage hardback copy of Kids Say the Darndest Things! by Art Linkletter, the genius behind the show of the same name which was hosted by Bill Cosby from 1998 to 2000 on CBS before seeing a comeback in 2021 with Tiffany Haddish as host.

Little did I know as I held a flashlight to my book under the covers as a kid that I would one day become mom to a boy who could fill an entire book just with his overly animated and brutally honest responses to everything.

I thought it would be fun to ask my son how to prepare certain things for Thanksgiving dinner to see how much he was paying attention while we cooked last year. What I didn't expect was for him to completely forget the fact that on Thanksgiving we make (almost) everything from scratch unlike during our regular weeknight dinners when we absolutely reach for packets of potatoes and stuffing. Looks like this year, John will be a bit more involved in the peeling of the Thanksgiving potatoes.

This is how to cook different components of Thanksgiving dinner according to my (quite animated and totally adorable) sous chef, six-year-old John.
