Nothing ruins a perfectly good potato quite like turning it into a gummy, gluey glop but before you spoon your mashed potatoes failure into the trash, there is something you can do to try to salvage them.

It's happened to the best of the best. A good attempt at making mashed potatoes from scratch has led to disappointment over potatoes that ended up a big, gloppy, gluey mess. The worst is when this happens just before guests arrive for a big Thanksgiving dinner and you don't have any packets of instant mashed potatoes that you can doctor with the hope nobody noticed.

I truly hope you don't find yourself in this situation, but if you do, there is hope in turning your mess into something that works. It might not be traditional mashed potatoes, but it will do the trick in a pinch.

First set your oven to 350 degrees. Then, find a casserole dish and spray it with non-stick cooking spray or coat it with butter.

Spoon in Potatoes and Look For Cheese

Next, spoon a layer of your gluey mashed potatoes into the casserole dish. Don't cry! Next, scrounge around in your refrigerator and cross your fingers that you've got some cheese tucked somewhere inside. If it's already shredded, count that as a bonus. If your cheese is not already shredded, shred it. Lay down a layer of cheese over the potatoes in the casserole dish and then top with another layer of mashed potatoes. Then, sprinkle with more cheese and finally, top with some breadcrumbs or even better, some of the extra fried onions you've got left over from your green bean casserole.

Pop the casserole dish into the oven and bake it until the cheese is melted.

Serve!
